The Maine Property Tax Stabilization program is a state program that allows certain senior citizens to freeze the property taxes on their home. As long as you qualify and file the necessary application each year by the due date (December 1), the taxes billed to you on your property will be frozen at the amount billed in the prior year.
To be eligible for the program and individual must meet all of the requirements as of April 1st of the property tax year for which you are requesting a freeze. For example, applications due December 1, 2022; qualifications must be met as of April 1, 2023. There are no income or asset limitations to qualify.
The qualification are as follows:
- At least 65 years old
- A permanent Maine resident
- Owned a home in Maine for at least 10 years; and
- Must be eligible for a homestead exemption on the property requesting the freeze
Applications must be completed by December 1, 2022 and submitted to your local municipality by that date.
